Fall Wedding Cake Ideas

Real Weddings

September 1, 2022

back to blog

As we start to create fall wedding cakes for this year’s wedding season, we wanted to take a breath and share a few fall wedding cake ideas for those of you who might be planning for 2023! Here at Sugar Euphoria, when it comes to cake: the sky is the limit. We are passionate about both the design and the way your wedding cake tastes. After all, wedding cakes are meant to be enjoyed. If you are feeling inspired, make sure to head here to learn more about our wedding cake services.

PS: Have you visited our Raleigh bakery yet? Our boutique cake + confectionery studio located at
606 N. Person Street, right here in Raleigh, NC. We would love to welcome you there!

1. Consider an Untraditional Shape

When you look for wedding cakes, most of the tiers will be round. For this styled wedding shoot by Radian Photography (celebrating Radhika’s rich Indian culture), we chose an untraditional shape to make the wedding cake stand out (and feel extra luxe). I still can’t stop starting at the result.

2. Choose a Warm Fall Wedding Color Palette

Save the bright pops of color and the soft pastels for the spring and summer. For fall, we love when couples choose a warm wedding color palette that resembles the gorgeous fall foliage. A bonus? Fall colors look even better with gold accents. I will never tire of adding 24kt edible gold leaf to wedding cakes.

Does this wedding cake look familiar? You may have seen it on Wedding Sparrow. We are always so grateful when our beautiful art is featured.

3. Include Dried Flowers on Your Wedding Cake

Although I love a wedding cake topped with fresh blooms, if you want something a little more autumn, why not consider a pressed flower cake instead? The three-tier wedding cake below still gives me deep whimsical vibes and was perfect for fall (you can read about the wedding feature here).

A little tip from a cake designer? Choosing dried flowers offers a timeless accent to designer cakes and photographs beautifully every time.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

4. Add Some Pie to Your Dessert Table

I love a good wedding cake alternative… but only when it’s paired with a wedding cake! For the below wedding (which you can read more about here), we created a pressed flower cake with edible flowers. If I could give you one piece of advice, it would be to make sure your florals are edible if you choose a pressed flower cake!! For this fall wedding, the couple didn’t stop with the cake. We added “dessert shooters” of apple pie, blueberry pie, and lemon cheesecake to complete their wedding dessert table.

5. Consider Texture

The below wedding cake was part of a styled shoot at Carolina Grove, and was one of my favorites over the last year. I don’t always get to play with different textures as a wedding cake designer, but it definitely gives your wedding cake an elevated look at feel. For the bottom tier, we spent several hours creating a beautiful terrazzo design (I have a feeling this will be popular for 2023 weddings!), and created the edible print from wafer paper. Then, for the 3D arches, used an extruder to carefully craft them to perfection. Together, it came together with the perfect whimsical boho feel.

6. A Black Wedding Cake!

In the spirit of the Halloween season, I have to include a black wedding cake in my list of fall wedding cake ideas. Although most fall wedding color palettes are warm, don’t be afraid to get a little moodier with your color palette if that’s what you prefer.
