When it comes to wedding cakes, there are endless options for frosting. As a wedding cake designer in Raleigh, I have experimented with many types over the years. However, there is one frosting that consistently wins over almost all of my wedding couples: buttercream. Not only does it create a luxurious look and feel, but it is also versatile, easy to work with, and (let’s be honest) usually tastes better than fondant. And let me just say – if you want your wedding cake to be dressed with fondant, we can still help you with that! Some designs and aesthetics can’t be accomplished the same way with buttercream (and I should know – I’ve been blogging about fondant vs. buttercream icing on wedding cakes since 2014!). What a throwback!
Now, let’s talk about why we love buttercream icing on wedding cakes! If you want to skip ahead and learn more about working with us to create YOUR wedding cake, head here!
Buttercream Icing on Wedding Cakes Often Gives a More Luxurious Look and Feel
This may be a matter of opinion because I have had the luxury of creating some pretty luxurious fondant wedding cakes. Not only is buttercream frosting delicious and easy to work with, it also adds a touch of luxury to any wedding cake. The smooth and creamy texture provides a clean canvas for intricate design work, allowing for endless possibilities. From simple swirls and rosettes to detailed piping and fondant accents, buttercream can truly make a cake stand out.
Buttercream Can Be Versatile When Creating Unique Wedding Cakes
Buttercream’s versatility doesn’t stop there. It also works well as a filling between cake layers, adding an extra burst of flavor and texture. In fact, buttercream comes in a variety of flavors including classic vanilla, rich chocolate, zesty lemon, and even fruity options like strawberry or hubiscus. Buttercream Tastes Better than Fondant
Was your mouth watering with the above flavors? While fondant is often used for decorative purposes, it can be lacking in taste. Fondant is made primarily of sugar and lacks the depth and richness of flavor that buttercream provides. Buttercream, on the other hand, is made with butter, sugar, and often other flavorful ingredients like vanilla extract or cocoa powder. When combined, these ingredients create a creamy, rich frosting that enhances the flavor of the cake rather than just covering it up.
At Sugar Euphoria, we know how important it is for a wedding cake to look beautiful and delicious. We believe that any beautiful cake should also taste amazing, which is why we only use the highest quality ingredients in our recipes. We take pride in creating cakes that look stunning and taste even better. As a result, couples can be confident that their wedding cake will be both gorgeous and delicious on their special day. Buttercream Can Be Customized to Fit Any Style
From smooth and sleek finishes to intricate designs and patterns, buttercream can be tailored to fit any style. Whether you choose to go with a classic white frosting or a bright and bold color, buttercream can often be mixed with food coloring or other ingredients to create the perfect shade.
Tips if You Chose to Use Buttercream Icing on Wedding Cakes
When it comes to serving cake at an event, the last thing you want is a dry, stale dessert. We take cake (and desserts!) a little too seriously to allow that! Thankfully, there are a few tips and tricks to keep your cake fresh and moist throughout the occasion.
Firstly, make sure to properly store your cake before the event. Next, consider the location of your event. If it’s outside in warm weather, keep your cake in a shaded area and away from direct sunlight. Heat can cause buttercream to melt and compromise the texture of the cake. Similarly, if your event is indoors, keep your cake away from any heating vents or sources of direct heat.
Lastly, consider the timing of when you plan to serve the cake. If you’re serving it later in the day, consider keeping it in the fridge until it’s ready to be served. This will help keep it fresh and prevent the frosting from melting. Alternatively, if you’re serving it earlier in the day, consider leaving it at room temperature for a few hours before serving.
